The Geometry of Leg-Side Fields: Where Bangladesh Must Find Their Fifth Bowler
The gap between Mustafizur Rahman's slower balls at the death and Mehidy Hasan Miraz's off-spin is not an absence of good bowlers - it is a geometric problem. In the last two years, Bangladesh's white-ball combinations have repeatedly lacked a third spinner or fourth seamer, forcing captains back to the same options. That dependency is the danger.
I have long watched the divide between specialist bowlers and all-rounders, and it is clearest here. Mustafizur is a death-overs specialist, but his reduced pace makes him easier to prepare for. Miraz works in the middle overs but struggles against top-order batters. The space between them is a structural problem: repeat the same option and batters read it.
In my book, Bangladesh's biggest issue is the missing fifth bowler. In T20s, three spinners or three seamers must share the load. With Mustafizur, Miraz and Taskin Ahmed busy, the fourth bowler remains uncertain. That uncertainty shapes captaincy and field settings.
When a team has a settled fifth bowler, captains set fields freely. Bangladesh returns to the same option instead. That dependency narrows the attack.
I would focus on three things: a third spinner who can bowl middle and death overs; a fourth seamer who can trouble top orders with the new ball; and an all-rounder who can be the fifth bowler.
Solve the geometry and Bangladesh become flexible. It needs long-term planning, not quick fixes. The coaching staff must start now.
